Education Sector Intervention

Nigeria's population exceeds 230 million, with roughly half under 18 years or of school age. UNICEF reports that Nigeria has 20 million out-of-school children. One in three Nigerian children is out of school, and one in five out-of-school children globally is Nigerian.
Education plays a critical role in improving quality of life by increasing productivity, driving inclusive economic growth, and alleviating poverty. Access to quality education aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4. Nigeria's educational focus needs to shift towards Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and other modern educational approaches at all levels to meet global standards.
Budget Allocation
Federal expenditure on education is 8% of national budget, less than UNESCO's recommended 15-20%. In 2022, the Education Sector was allocated ₦1.3 trillion, translating to approximately ₦5,652 per capita (with a population of 230 million).
Infrastructure Gaps
Poor infrastructural development and inadequate access to quality basic education across regions
Policy & Curriculum
Outdated educational policies and practices, deficient curriculum, and insufficient number of skilled teachers
Security & Cultural Barriers
Insecurity especially across many Northern States, cultural roadblocks for the girl child, and rapidly rising population where 40% is below age 15
