Healthcare Sector Intervention
Nigeria's average life expectancy is 54 years, lower than peer African countries like Ghana (61 years) and South Africa (57 years). Maternal mortality rate is 576 per 100,000 live births (vs. UN SDG target of 70 by 2030); infant mortality is 69 per 1,000 live births. Public healthcare spending is just 3.75% of GDP. Hospital beds per 1,000 population: 0.9 vs. global average of 2.3. An estimated 5,000 patients monthly travel abroad for healthcare, costing over $1 billion annually.
Health is a fundamental human right essential for sustainable development and socio-economic productivity. Nigeria, with a population of 230 million, faces significant challenges in providing quality healthcare services. Medical tourism siphons capital and access, with an estimated $1 billion spent annually on overseas treatment.
Limited Public Funding
Federal expenditure on healthcare is 5% of national budget, less than WHO's recommended 15%. In 2022, the Healthcare Sector was allocated ₦800 billion, translating to approximately ₦3,478 per capita (less than $10).
Infrastructure & Workforce Gaps
Acute shortage of hospital beds (0.9 per 1,000 vs. global 2.3) and intensive care beds (0.07 per 100,000 vs. Kenya's 0.3) — brain drain of medical professionals seeking better conditions — lack of qualified personnel and equipment
Low Insurance Coverage
Low employment-based health insurance penetration increases out-of-pocket burden and limits access to essential healthcare services
Weak Systems & Governance
Lack of access to reliable electricity negatively impacts service delivery — weak supply chain management — weak governance and policy implementation — limited data availability for planning and decision-making
Strategic Objectives & Pillars
GLWD Healthcare Development Company Limited's vision is to reposition Nigeria's healthcare sector through the development, operation, and management of greenfield primary and tertiary healthcare facilities via a sustainable, private sector-led initiative, founded on the principle that quality healthcare should be accessible to all. The strategy is anchored on four pillars:
01
Sustainable Financing
GLWD Healthcare Development Company Limited is resourced from GLWD Investment Company Limited, recognizing that operating costs exceed revenues generated from operations.
02
Primary Healthcare Intervention
Develop, construct, operate and manage greenfield primary healthcare centers to international standards. Roadmap: at least one functional primary health center (PHC) in each political ward to improve access, drive progress toward UN SDG health targets, and reduce infant and maternal mortality rates.
03
Expand Health Insurance Coverage
Scale up healthcare insurance coverage and support enrollment expansion to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare burden.
04
Employment Creation
Create tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs through significant recruitment and training of healthcare personnel and workers — provide good remuneration and working conditions for all healthcare personnel.
